Massachusetts RMV in Boston

The main branch of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is located at 630 Washington Street in the Chinatown Section of Boston, MA.

The Registry's Driver Control Unit, which handles license suspensions, reinstatements, and hardship license hearings is located at this branch. The Mass. RMV in Boston is the only location where RMV Breathalyzer Refusal Hearings are held.

License Reinstatement Hearings are held daily on the 4th floor of the Boston RMV Chinatown Branch, during the Registry's normal business hours. This office is closed on weekends and holidays. If you have any questions or need more information about your Massachusetts License suspension or revocation, you may call the Registry of Motor Vehicles Suspensions Department at (857) 368-8200. You should have your license number and identifying information ready when you call. The Boston Branch of the RMV does not handle ignition interlock violations or conduct ignition interlock violation hearings. These hearings are conducted at the Quincy RMV Branch which is located at 25 Newport Ave. Extension in Quincy, Massachusetts. Also, license fraud hearings are conducted at the Special Investigations Unit, which is located at 10 Park Plaza in Boston. "Comp. Fraud Lic./ID" hearings are not held at the Chinatown location.

In or about April of next year, the Registry of Motor Vehicles will be moving out of the Chinatown location to a new Boston location near Haymarket. The move from the leased building at 630 Washington Street to the new state-owed location will save the Registry $1 million per year.  When the main Boston branch moves, the Registry plans to open a limited service RMV Express location in Chinatown.

If you are visiting the Boston RMV for a license suspension hearing, you should be prepared to wait a considerable amount of time for a hearing. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of hearings and the very limited number of hearings officers, it could take a couple of hours to get a hearing. I have found that the hearings officers are working as fast as they can to service customers and the delays can be attributed to the insufficient number of hearings officers to handle the workload, especially during peak times. The staff works as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, there are simply not enough hearing officers to handle the demand. I recommend bringing a good book, laptop, or ipad.
